Call for Submissions

The 2014 Workshop on the Impact of Pen and Touch Technology in Education seeks papers that report on the impact of pen and touch interfaces across K-12 education settings, including both formal and informal learning environments. WIPTTE 2014 will take place on March 12-15, 2014 at Texas A\&M University in College Station, Texas, USA.

High School Contest

We will be collocating the annual TAMU high school conference at TAMU, with this year's theme on tablet computing. Teams consisting of 3-6 k-12 students, accompanied by a team leader are expected to apply. There will be prizes. Teachers and student teams will get free registration to the WIPTTE conference. The organizing committee seeks full paper, short paper, and posters abstract submissions in the following categories:

1. You-Try-It Hands-On Laboratory Strand. You-Try-It papers complements the overall program of the workshop. Hands-on laboratory sessions show novel, interesting, and important concepts or systems pertaining to pen and touch technologies that impact education. We invite submissions related to educational technologies that heavily employ either pen or touch modalities. All submissions are intended to allow participants at the workshop to have an hands-on experience in trying out your session.

2. Call For Presentations: Technology in Practice Strand. In this strand, we especially invite K-12 and university faculty to submit paper proposals that reflect experience in formal classroom and informal educational settings. Full papers will present mature or relatively mature deployments and furnish evidence of claims of student impact on learning. Submissions should include quantitative and/or qualitative data that highlight positive outcomes or challenges. Short papers will present works-in-progress with preliminary results and will summarize key elements of expected impact in the future.

Submissions should include a 150 word abstract and an accompanying description of up to 1000 words.

3. Late Breaking Results: Emerging Technology Research Strand. Full papers in this category will focus on research efforts that may help shape pen and touch applications in the future. These papers generally will include a literature synthesis and an investigative approach that may include pilot studies, case studies, or theory-building that facilitates or charts future educational uses. Short papers will present imaginative research perspectives or detail the early stages of new investigations.

4. Call For Posters: We also welcome poster submissions for those people who don't want to give an oral presentation but still have valuable research to share this is perfect for students, teachers, and early researchers.

Submissions should include a 150 word abstract and an accompanying description of no more than 1000 words.

In addition to a formal presentation slot, all presenters will be invited to present a poster to permit greater exposure and interactivity. Additionally, individuals interested in presenting on-going work in a poster session format only are welcome to submit a one page description (see submission instructions).

Saturday Sessions

Special invitation for K-12 teachers. In order to accommodate the growing number of K-12 school teachers engaged in tablet and touch computing, the Saturday session of the workshop on Saturday, March 15, 2014, will feature interactive sessions and presentations by teachers, students, and researchers. Teachers are strongly encouraged to submit papers and/or posters.

Review and Topics

All submissions will be peer reviewed. Contributions are welcome to define "Education" broadly to include in-class experiences as well as learning activities that occur outside the classroom. Potential topics appear below for each strand, though the summaries are intended to serve as examples and are not comprehensive. Successful submissions in the Technology in Practice strand will typically consider impact in one or more of the following areas:

While we expect many evaluations to be largely positive, we recognize the value of sharing what has not worked as well as what has. Therefore, the evaluation component may include positive outcomes, negative outcomes, or a mixture of the two.

Successful submissions in the Emerging Technology Research strand may highlight investigations into the social, cognitive, haptic, or motivational dynamics associated with pen and touch interfaces. Others may highlight development of software systems that recognize symbol and touch patterns in ways that may advance the design of learning or educational settings. Typically, papers in this strand will include an empirical component, but the committee also welcomes compelling theoretical papers that -- with other contributions -- help the community chart a promising future.

Registration Scholarships

The WIPTTE Scholarship Program is designed to provide participating teachers and students with access to the conferences in cases where the registration fee might otherwise be prohibitive. Scholarship awardees will receive free conference registration. To be eligible for a scholarship, you must:

  1. Be a K-12 teacher, K-12 administrator, or student
  2. Either have submitted a proposal in response to the Call for Submissions above –or- submit a novel lesson plan with your application materials using the template in the Application Form a creative and successful way to encorporate pen/touch technologies in the classroom. If awarded a scholarship, you will present this lesson plan in a five-minute presentation at the conference.

Conference Volunteers

The WIPTTE Volunteer Program allows students to participate in the operations of the WIPTTE conference. It allows students invaluable networking opportunities, insight into exciting research fields, and a rewarding service experience.
